As one of the few female science teachers in an industry once dominated by men, Joan understands the importance of representation. “As a woman, I hope to project a positive image so that when my students graduate, they will remember that women can make a difference in the world, too,” she says.
Looking ahead, Joan remains committed to inspiring young minds, shaping them into leaders, thinkers, and change-makers through her work at The Browning School.
A Lifelong Passion for Education
Joan’s journey into education began in high school when she participated in a community service program. Teaching children how to play the recorder, tutoring math, and organizing playground games sparked her love for education. Her ability to include all children, regardless of skill level, was recognized early on by school leaders. She also taught swimming to children with special needs and ballet at a local studio, reinforcing her passion for helping others grow.
Her curiosity for science and engineering was evident from childhood—experimenting with different solutions, measuring snowfall rates, and even designing model cities with her older brother. Joan’s early fascination with discovery became the foundation for her future career as a science educator.
